Instantly vs Smartlead

Instantly is the broader suite, while Smartlead gives agencies and power users per-client white label, dedicated IPs from $39 and lower list prices at volume.

Prices checked October 2026
Every price from the vendor's own pages

The short answer

Disclosure: I build Reachkit, which competes with both tools. I checked every price below on each vendor’s own site in October 2026.

My verdict: Instantly is the broader, more polished suite, and Smartlead is the toolkit for agencies and power users. Both advertise unlimited inboxes with warmup, sell done-for-you inboxes and offer an official MCP server, the connector that lets AI assistants like Claude work inside an app. Instantly grows by adding products like lead data, a CRM and AI agents; Smartlead grows by adding control, from branded client workspaces to dedicated IPs. On list prices, Smartlead was cheaper in both setups I modeled.

Pick Instantly if:

  • You want an easier start: G2’s comparison page names ease of use as one of Instantly’s headline strengths.
  • You want lead data, a CRM with calling and SMS, and AI agents that reply and book meetings from one vendor.
  • You build on the API, which is part of the $47 plan.

Pick Smartlead if:

  • You run an agency and want white-label workspaces where you can limit clients to answering replies, at $29 per client monthly from Pro.
  • You send at volume. Unlimited Smart, at $174, bundles 150,000 sends, unlimited contact storage and 50,000 verified prospect emails monthly.
  • You want Outlook done-for-you inboxes, or a dedicated IP for $39 per server on Pro and up.

Setup: who does the work

In both Instantly and Smartlead you do most of the setup yourself, and both sell inboxes to speed it up.

With your own mailboxes you connect Google or Microsoft by login (others over IMAP/SMTP), set up DNS, switch on warmup and load a list. Both can draft the campaign from a prompt, through Instantly AI or Smartlead’s SmartAssistant.

The done-for-you offers differ more:

  • Instantly sells Google Workspace inboxes, with no Microsoft option: $5 each per month plus $15 per domain per year, set up within 24 to 72 hours with DNS records done and warmup already running. Ready-warmed Google inboxes run $10 monthly, sold five at a time. AirMail, Instantly’s own sending accounts, costs $4 monthly, with a hard limit of 20 campaign emails daily and business recipients only.
  • Smartlead’s SmartSenders provisions Google or Outlook mailboxes from $4.50 monthly plus $13 per domain, live in 24 to 48 hours, or ready-warmed ones at $9. Smartlead’s ordering guide tells you to start warmup before the first campaign.

Neither lets bought inboxes leave: Instantly holds on to the domains and their admin access, and SmartSenders mailboxes are non-transferable. Smartlead’s help center adds that SmartSenders domains run a fixed one-year term, so year two means new domains, which its Replace flow can order for you.

Whichever you choose, I’d give any test eight weeks: a month of warmup, then a month of real sends.

Inbox placement as you grow

Neither Instantly nor Smartlead can promise inbox placement. Most people run whatever ships switched on, so I’d compare the defaults first.

Instantly’s safety net is mostly on from the start: a campaign pauses itself once bounces top 5% (after its first 200 sends), and sending rotates across accounts. Its slow ramp for new inboxes stays off until you turn it on, and its guidance tops out at 30 campaign emails per inbox per day. Open tracking is set per campaign, and Instantly’s own guide says not to track the opening email.

Smartlead rotates sending too, keeping each lead on one sender for the whole sequence. Its help center advises 40 to 50 emails a day per new mailbox, warmup included, and says each new campaign tracks opens and clicks unless you switch them off, though its done-for-you guide recommends turning both off. Two 2026 additions help at scale: one-click reconnects for mailboxes that drop (August) and Auto-Replace (September), an opt-in tool that orders a fresh mailbox when one starts to burn.

Both sell placement tests (Instantly from $47 a month, Smartlead from $49), dedicated sending infrastructure (Instantly on its $358 Light Speed plan, Smartlead at $39 per server) and better warmup pools.

Both also put fine print on “unlimited”. Instantly’s terms (September 2026) cap connected accounts at 100 per workspace. Smartlead’s fair use policy (February 2026) lists caps of 100 to 800 mailboxes under older plan names, and a help article says your limit depends on your plan. Planning hundreds of inboxes in one workspace? Ask first.

Day to day: replies, teammates and the learning curve

Instantly’s Unibox and Smartlead’s Master Inbox both gather replies from every connected mailbox, but differ on who may answer there and how fast replies appear.

  • Replying: Instantly AI-labels replies on every plan, but its $47 Growth plan only previews them in the Unibox, so you answer from each mailbox until you move to Hypergrowth ($97). Smartlead’s pricing doesn’t list Master Inbox replying as restricted on Base, though its help center puts Untracked Replies (answers from a new address or thread) on Pro.
  • Reply timing: Smartlead documents a 30 to 60 minute sync before a reply appears, with an extra check right before any follow-up so a lead who answered isn’t chased. A different help article promises replies within a minute.
  • Teammates: neither charges per seat. Instantly invites need Hypergrowth, Light Speed or a CRM plan. Smartlead’s help center says Pro, while two of its comparison pages say every plan.

On the learning curve, ease of use is the top praise for both tools on G2. One Reddit user who had tried both put it this way in August 2026: “…Smartlead is better for managing clients/workspaces, Instantly is a little simpler for solo use.”

AI and building on top

On AI, Instantly lets software act for you more, while Smartlead folds more of its AI into the plan price.

  • Instantly: Instantly AI turns a plain-language request into a campaign, a lead list or an automation, and building campaigns with it costs no credits. The AI Reply Agent writes responses, handles objections and can book meetings through Calendly, on autopilot from Hypergrowth, at 5 credits per generated reply even if unsent. The AI Sales Agent prospects, writes and sends outreach, with an optional autopilot, at 5 credits a lead.
  • Smartlead: SmartAssistant, added in May 2026 and free on every plan including the trial, is a chat agent that builds campaigns, imports leads, drafts sequences and troubleshoots. The Reply Agent writes goal-based responses that wait for your review; sending them automatically is listed as coming soon.

For builders, Instantly opens up earlier: the API comes with the $47 plan at up to 100 requests a second, and webhooks start at $97. Smartlead keeps both for Pro ($94) and up, at 60 to 120 requests a minute. Both MCP servers sign in with an API key; Instantly hosts one that mirrors its whole API, and Smartlead’s help center documents a hosted one for Claude Desktop.

For CRMs, Smartlead’s integrations page lists more, including HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Attio, GoHighLevel and Zoho. Instantly connects HubSpot and Pipedrive natively, HighLevel through its automations and Salesforce through OutboundSync, and sells its own CRM.

Suite or agency toolkit: what each is built around

This is the real fork: Instantly is a suite you add products to, and Smartlead is a sending platform with agency controls built around it.

Instantly’s extras are whole products, each its own subscription:

  • Instantly Credits from $9 a month, for SuperSearch (450M+ contacts), enrichment, the AI agents and website visitor identification.
  • A CRM with calling and SMS, at $47 or $97 a month.
  • Inbox placement tests at $47 or $97, and a VIP managed service.

Smartlead’s extras are mostly about running clients. Its branded client workspaces cost $29 per client monthly on Pro and above, with three thrown in on Unlimited Prime. Each client signs in at your own domain, and you can restrict them to answering replies, show them only the Interested ones, and sell them packages at prices you set. Smartlead also sells lead data (SmartProspect, 300M+ profiles by its count) and a managed outbound service priced on a call.

Instantly has white label too, from Hypergrowth: a client portal on your domain with campaigns, the Unibox, analytics and the CRM, with no per-client fee or client limit listed. Ten clients cost about $97 a month on Instantly, against $384 on Smartlead Pro, though fully separate client accounts need an Outreach plan each. Smartlead’s pull is configuration, not client count: warmup pools that rise with the plan, $39 dedicated IPs and the client controls above.

What it costs

Below are my two standard setups, priced from each vendor’s public rates in October 2026: monthly billing, before tax, Google inboxes bought in each tool, and every prospect from its own database (Instantly averages about 1.5 credits per verified email). Smartlead’s half-price first month is ignored.

Founder: one person sending roughly 4,000 emails a month from 10 inboxes across 5 domains, reaching 1,500 new prospects. Agency: three users sending roughly 25,000 emails a month from 60 inboxes across 20 domains, reaching 10,000 new prospects.

Instantly’s Growth caps stored contacts at 1,000 and only previews Unibox replies, so the founder lands on Hypergrowth (Growth, with constant pruning and replies from Gmail, comes to about $200). Smartlead’s Base fits if you clear finished campaigns monthly to stay under 2,000 contacts, and Reachkit’s Growth fills its 5,000 in about month four. For the agency, Unlimited Smart has no contact cap and includes data, while Instantly’s 25,000 contacts run out in under three months (each extra 25,000 is $87 a month). Reachkit’s Scale fills the same 25,000 in about two and a half months; its next tier, covering the lead data too, makes the total about $564.

With your own lists the gap narrows: $153 against $89 for the founder, $422 against $386 (Smartlead Pro) for the agency. Instantly’s data line also drops if most finds cost 1 credit, and annual billing cuts Hypergrowth to $77.60 and Smartlead’s plans by 17%. For the rest of the budget, I keep a list of the line items people forget.

What users say

Ratings swing a lot by platform (checked October 2026):

Instantly users praise the polish and unlimited accounts; Smartlead fans point to cheap scale and client workspaces.

The complaints overlap:

  • Plan gating: for Instantly, the top con on G2 is pricier tiers holding back key features, and Reddit threads warn that Growth can’t answer leads from the Unibox.
  • Billing and cancellation: raised in 2026 Trustpilot reviews of both. Instantly’s terms make all fees non-refundable; Smartlead’s terms say the same, though its help center offers new customers a 7-day refund.
  • Support speed: Instantly’s Trustpilot reviewers complain that support starts with an AI and is slow to hand over to a human. Smartlead’s FAQ targets a reply inside 24 hours, yet a help article says 48 to 72 hours, and Trustpilot’s AI summary of its reviews notes “…extremely slow response times…”.

A third option: Reachkit

When neither fits, here’s how Reachkit, the product I build, differs. It’s a smaller toolbox, built around doing more of the setup for you:

  • More on the entry plan. The $39 Growth plan covers Unibox replies, as many teammates as you like and 1,000 verified-lead credits each month.
  • Campaign first. Type one sentence about your target buyer, and the AI writes the sequence and estimates a matching audience from 500M+ profiles. Reachkit’s done-for-you inboxes run on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 at $5 per inbox monthly and $15 per domain yearly, warming up automatically.
  • Cautious defaults. New inboxes start at 3 emails a day and climb to 20, open tracking is off out of the box, CSV uploads get verified, and a campaign pauses past 5% bounces.

Reachkit has no white label, placement tests or AI that answers replies, so if you need those, stay with Instantly or Smartlead. The detail lives on my Instantly comparison and my Smartlead comparison.

Switching between them

Moving between them is mostly about inboxes, in either direction:

  1. Export first. Instantly needs an active subscription to export. Leads come out as CSV with their status and labels, sequences through the API or by hand, and replies in bulk only through the API. Smartlead exports each campaign’s leads and inbox, reply text included, as CSV, and deletes your data after a grace period once you unsubscribe.
  2. Reconnect inboxes you own. Mailboxes on your own Google, Microsoft or SMTP accounts plug into either tool, and the sending reputation travels with the mailbox and its domain. Turn warmup off in the tool you’re leaving to avoid double warmup.
  3. Replace bought inboxes. Neither tool’s done-for-you inboxes can move. Order replacements and give them roughly three weeks of warmup while the old campaigns keep running. Then cancel: Instantly’s subscriptions each need cancelling separately, and SmartSenders mailboxes bill monthly until you delete them or cancel your Smartlead plan.

Instantly vs Smartlead: common questions

Is Smartlead or Instantly better?

Neither wins outright. Instantly is broader, with lead data, a CRM, AI agents that answer replies and an API on its $47 plan. Smartlead suits agencies and high-volume senders, with white-label client workspaces, Outlook done-for-you inboxes and lead data included on its Unlimited plans.

Which is cheaper, Instantly or Smartlead?

Smartlead, at list prices. Its entry plan is $39 against Instantly's $47, and since Instantly's $47 plan can't reply from the Unibox, I priced Instantly on Hypergrowth. With done-for-you inboxes and lead data, my founder setup came to about $148 a month on Smartlead against $250, and my agency setup to about $466 against $722. With your own lists it's about $89 against $153, and $386 against $422 (October 2026).

Which has better deliverability, Instantly or Smartlead?

No independent test I know of settles it, and no tool can promise inbox placement. Both include warmup and rotation, and both sell placement tests and dedicated infrastructure. Defaults differ: Instantly pauses campaigns past 5% bounces but leaves its new-inbox ramp off, while Smartlead tracks opens and clicks by default, per its help center. Your list and domains matter more than the tool.

Is Smartlead AI legit?

Yes. Smartlead is run by 521 Products Pty Ltd, an Australian company, and says over 100,000 businesses use it. In October 2026 its G2 score was 4.5 from 450+ reviews and its Trustpilot score 2.9 from 141, with complaints centered on support speed and billing. Its changelog lists 18 entries between November 2025 and October 2026.

Can I move inboxes from Instantly to Smartlead, or back?

Mailboxes you set up yourself on Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or an SMTP host, yes: connect them to the new tool and their sending reputation comes along. Inboxes bought inside either tool, no. Instantly keeps the domains and admin access for its done-for-you inboxes, and SmartSenders mailboxes are locked to Smartlead. Replace those and give the replacements about three weeks of warmup.

What are some good alternatives to Smartlead and Instantly?

It depends on why you're looking. Lemlist fits if you want LinkedIn steps next to email (Multichannel plan). EmailBison gives very high-volume senders their own single-tenant instance and dedicated IPs, starting at $599 monthly. Reachkit, my product, suits people who want the campaign and inboxes set up for them, with replies, teammates and lead credits on the $39 plan.

My take

For a founder or small team that wants lead data, a CRM or an AI agent from the same vendor later, I’d pick Instantly. For an agency that wants per-client controls and dedicated IPs, or anyone sending enough volume that Unlimited Smart’s bundled data pays for itself, I’d pick Smartlead. Your list and the patience to warm inboxes properly decide results more than either tool. If neither fits, Reachkit’s 30-day trial needs no card.
