Smartlead vs lemlist

Smartlead suits agencies sending email at volume across many mailboxes and client workspaces, while lemlist suits teams that combine email, LinkedIn steps, calls and per-lead personalization in one sequence.

The short answer

Reachkit, the product I run, competes with both tools, and I checked every price below on Smartlead’s and lemlist’s own sites on October 15, 2026.

My verdict: Smartlead is built around the sending side, for people running many mailboxes, often for clients. lemlist is built around the touches: email, LinkedIn, calls and per-lead personalization in one sequence. For email only, Smartlead usually costs less once mailboxes and lead data are counted, and for LinkedIn steps, lemlist does natively what Smartlead does through partner tools.

Pick Smartlead if:

  • You run cold email for clients and want white-label workspaces, which cost $29 a month for each client on Pro ($94) and up.
  • You want $4.50 done-for-you Google mailboxes, with dedicated IPs and placement tests available in the same account.
  • Your volume is high and you want verified leads bundled: Unlimited Smart is $174 for 150,000 sends and 50,000 verified emails.

Pick lemlist if:

  • Your sequences need LinkedIn invites, messages, voice notes, calls or SMS next to the emails.
  • Custom images, personalized landing pages and conditional text are part of your edge.
  • Your inboxes and lead data come from elsewhere, and you want the API and an MCP server on a $69 plan with no user limit.

Setup: from signup to the first campaign

Smartlead and lemlist both buy and configure sending mailboxes for you; they differ on price, on how long a new mailbox waits, and on what you can take with you.

Smartlead connects mailboxes you already run (Google, Outlook or SMTP) or sells new ones through SmartSenders. Per its help center (checked October 2026), SmartSenders handles domain registration, DNS records and connection and delivers in 24 to 48 hours; a Google mailbox costs $4.50 a month and its domain $13 a year. The same help center says each SmartSenders domain lasts exactly one year, can’t be renewed, and works only inside Smartlead.

lemlist sells a domain together with Google, Outlook or SMTP mailboxes, sets SPF, DKIM and DMARC itself, and quotes 2 to 4 hours for setup. Its mailboxes cost from $10 a month on Google or Outlook and from $5 on SMTP. After 60 days you’re free to transfer a lemlist-bought domain to another registrar, though the Workspace subscription stays put.

On warmup, Smartlead gives a new mailbox at least 14 days and calls 2 to 3 weeks the usual warmup, or sells pre-warmed mailboxes at $9 a month. lemlist’s lemwarm guide asks for about 40 days of ramp, then 14 of stabilization, before the first campaign.

Inbox placement: how each protects sender reputation

Smartlead sells more deliverability infrastructure as add-ons, while lemlist puts its monitoring tools in every plan.

Smartlead’s warmup is included everywhere, and the warmup pool you join rises with your plan, from Foundation on Base to Premium on Unlimited Smart and Prime. Paying extra buys SmartDelivery placement testing ($49 to $599 monthly) or a SmartServers dedicated IP ($39 monthly per server). Two 2026 additions help keep mailboxes running: one-click reconnects (August) and Auto-Replace (September), which swaps in a new mailbox when one is burning out or about to reach its one-year end.

lemwarm, lemlist’s warmup, exchanges mail across 20,000+ domains and ships with every plan, as do the Deliverability Hub, alerts and DNS checks; placement tests cost 100 credits each.

Both rotate a campaign’s sends across its mailboxes and keep each lead on one sender, and both track opens and clicks by default. Smartlead’s own done-for-you guide advises switching tracking off, which I’d do in either tool, since scanners and Apple Mail fire the pixels and skew open rates.

Day to day: seats, replies and drafts

Teammates carry no seat fee on Smartlead or on lemlist’s Email plan, and cost $109 a month each on lemlist’s Multichannel plan.

Smartlead’s pages disagree on whether the $39 Base plan includes teammates: its lemlist comparison says seats are unlimited on all plans, while its help article on adding team members says to subscribe to Pro (both checked October 15, 2026). lemlist’s Multichannel rule is “1 account = 1 person”, so running three sender personas means paying for three seats.

Smartlead’s Master Inbox pulls replies from every mailbox and client into one view, with filters, bulk actions and assignment. As of October 2026, its help center puts 30 to 60 minutes between a reply arriving and showing there, plus a check before every follow-up, though another article promises replies within a minute. lemlist’s unified inbox gathers replies across channels; its pricing table puts it on Multichannel and Enterprise, its product FAQ on every plan.

Both draft answers for a person to approve: Smartlead’s Reply Agent, with auto-send marked “coming soon”, and lemlist’s lemAgent.

AI and building on it

lemlist gives builders more on its cheapest plan, Smartlead keeps its API for Pro and up, and both put AI agents inside the app.

lemlist includes its REST API, webhooks and an official MCP server even on the $69 Email plan. MCP is an open standard that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT work inside another app, and lemlist’s server connects through OAuth or an API key from Claude, ChatGPT, Grok or Cursor. lemAgent builds campaigns and drafts copy with you approving each step, and separate agents watch intent signals and enrich leads.

Smartlead’s API and webhooks need Pro ($94) or higher, and its official MCP server connects with an API key, set up for Claude Desktop in the help center. SmartAssistant, on every plan since May 2026, builds campaigns and writes sequences from a chat. SmartAgents are no-code automations that fire on a timer or an event, for example a daily report for each client.

For CRM sync, both list HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Attio and Zoho. lemlist adds Close and labels its HubSpot and Salesforce syncs two-way, as Smartlead does for Salesforce; Smartlead adds GoHighLevel, which lemlist’s integrations page doesn’t list.

Where they really split: client infrastructure or multichannel reach

This pair divides on what each product is built around: Smartlead on running many mailboxes for many clients, lemlist on reaching one prospect through several channels.

Smartlead’s agency kit:

  • White label: each client workspace is a $29 monthly add-on from Pro, and Unlimited Prime bundles three.
  • Client access: clients sign in at your own domain, buy packages you price, and can be limited to replying, with only leads marked Interested showing.
  • Mailboxes: no per-mailbox fee; the pricing page says unlimited on every plan, though Smartlead’s Fair Use Policy and a help article mention plan limits.

In one lemlist sequence, a lead might get a profile visit, a connection invite, a LinkedIn message, voice note or InMail, a call from the built-in dialer and a text, with later steps depending on how the lead responded. Multichannel includes 400 call minutes per user, texting requires a lemlist phone number ($15 a month) and 6 credits per SMS, and WhatsApp is a $20 add-on per user each month. Personalization goes further too, with Liquid syntax for conditional text and a custom image or landing page per lead.

Each covers the other’s ground only partway. Smartlead reaches LinkedIn through its HeyReach and Aimfox integrations and calls through SmartDialer (credits from $9 a month), and its FAQ says it doesn’t send SMS or WhatsApp natively. I found no white label in lemlist: each client gets its own team and subscription, unsubscribe lists stay per team, and resellers need separate terms.

What it costs

Smartlead comes out well under lemlist once done-for-you mailboxes and lead data are counted; bring both yourself and lemlist’s Email plan is the cheaper platform at agency volume. Even lemlist’s own comparison page gives Smartlead the win on price for high-volume email.

Assumptions: list prices on October 15, 2026, monthly billing, no tax, Google mailboxes from each vendor, and one verified email per new prospect from the vendor’s data.

  • Founder: one person, 5 domains with 10 inboxes, roughly 4,000 sends and 1,500 fresh prospects per month.
  • Agency: three users, 20 domains with 60 inboxes, roughly 25,000 sends and 10,000 fresh prospects per month.

Agency: lead dataIncluded$441 in credits$125 in top-ups
Agency total$465.67$1,110 plus domains$549
  • lemlist: domain prices aren’t published, so they’re left out. A verified email costs 5 credits, which puts the founder on the 10,000-credit pack and the agency on the 50,000 pack. With LinkedIn steps, Multichannel ($109 a seat, $9 per sender beyond five per user) totals about $348 and $1,773 before domains.
  • Smartlead: Base stores 2,000 contacts at a time, so the founder deletes finished campaigns monthly or moves to Pro ($94). The agency would fill Pro’s 30,000 contacts in three months, hence Unlimited Smart.
  • Own inboxes and data: $39 on Smartlead against $69 on lemlist for the founder, but $94 to $174 against $69 for the agency.

Reachkit’s contact limits fill too: Growth’s 5,000 in about month four for the founder, Scale’s 25,000 in about two and a half months for the agency. If you’ve read Smartlead’s lemlist comparison, its lemlist prices are for the per-user Email Pro plan, which lemlist stopped selling to new customers around May 2026.

What reviewers say about each

Smartlead’s ratings swing widely by platform, while lemlist’s sit at about 4.6 on both G2 and Capterra (all read October 2026).

Smartlead averages 4.5 across 454 G2 reviews and 2.9 across 141 on Trustpilot, where 63 reviews give five stars and 66 give one.

  • Praise: running many inboxes and clients without per-mailbox fees, and, per Trustpilot’s AI summary, a user-friendly interface. In an August 2026 Reddit comment, one user wrote that “…Smartlead is better for managing clients/workspaces…”
  • Complaints: support speed and billing. Trustpilot’s AI summary mentions “…extremely slow response times…”, and several 2026 reviews describe billing or cancellation trouble. Smartlead’s FAQ targets a reply within a day, and one help article says support typically responds within 48 to 72 hours.

lemlist has over 2,300 G2 reviews and 387 on Capterra.

  • Praise: G2’s AI summary of lemlist reviews puts ease of use first, then personalized automation and its Gmail and LinkedIn connections.
  • Complaints: the same summary lists an expensive credit system, an interface that’s confusing at times and underdeveloped AI message writing.
  • Deliverability: one user’s six-month write-up from January 2026 reports it as “stable”.

A third option, disclosed: Reachkit

When the job is email alone and you’d rather not assemble the sending side yourself, I’d add Reachkit to the shortlist, knowing I built it.

  • One price per workspace. Growth is $39 a month with unlimited teammates, 15,000 emails and 1,000 verified-lead credits. Scale starts at $99 and adds the API, webhooks and CRM sync.
  • Set up from the campaign. You type one sentence about your buyer; Reachkit’s AI writes the sequence and estimates a matching audience from 500M+ profiles. When you order inboxes, Reachkit registers the domains ($15 a year each) and sets up Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 mailboxes at $5 a month, with warmup switched on from the start.
  • Careful defaults. New inboxes send 3 campaign emails a day, rising by 3 daily to a default limit of 20. Open tracking is off to begin with, imports are checked for bad addresses, and bounces above 5% pause the campaign.

What it doesn’t do: LinkedIn or any channel besides email, white label, placement tests or dedicated IPs. Details: Reachkit compared with Smartlead and with lemlist.

Moving from one to the other

Your own mailboxes and lists move between Smartlead and lemlist; sequences and anything bought inside the old tool mostly stay behind.

  • Mailboxes you own reconnect through Google or Microsoft sign-in, or IMAP and SMTP. Reputation stays with the mailbox and its domain, so it travels too. Switch off the old tool’s warmup first.
  • SmartSenders mailboxes can’t be used outside Smartlead, so warm replacements before you cancel, then delete the old ones, which bill monthly until you delete them or cancel the plan.
  • Mailboxes bought in lemlist come with SMTP and IMAP details other tools can use. To leave lemlist entirely, transfer the domain after 60 days and recreate the mailboxes; an unpaid one is deleted with its emails.
  • Data: Smartlead exports leads and replies as CSV per campaign and deletes account data after a grace period once you cancel. lemlist exports leads per campaign, offers unsubscribes and messages through its API, and keeps your data after you cancel.
  • Timing: neither refunds a billing period once it has started, outside Smartlead’s short refund windows, so switch at renewal.

Smartlead vs lemlist: common questions

Is Smartlead or lemlist better?

It depends on your channels. Smartlead fits agencies and high-volume email: no per-mailbox fees (its pricing page lists unlimited mailboxes on every plan), white-label client workspaces and done-for-you mailboxes from $4.50 a month. lemlist fits teams whose outreach runs email alongside LinkedIn, phone calls or texts, or that rely on per-lead images and landing pages.

Is Smartlead cheaper than lemlist?

Usually, once mailboxes and lead data are counted. With done-for-you Google mailboxes and one verified email per prospect, a solo founder pays about $148 a month on Smartlead against $263 plus domains on lemlist's Email plan, and a three-person agency about $466 against $1,110 plus domains. If you already have inboxes and a list, lemlist's $69 Email plan costs less than any Smartlead plan above Base. Checked October 2026.

Does Smartlead do LinkedIn outreach like lemlist?

Not on its own. Smartlead adds LinkedIn through its HeyReach and Aimfox integrations and calls through SmartDialer. lemlist builds LinkedIn profile visits, invites, messages, voice notes and InMails into its own sequences on the Multichannel plan, priced in October 2026 at $109 a user per month. Its $69 Email plan has no LinkedIn steps.

Which has better deliverability, Smartlead or lemlist?

No tool can guarantee the inbox. Both offer warmup, inbox rotation and placement tests. Smartlead offers more infrastructure: dedicated IPs, warmup pools tiered by plan and a tool that swaps out burning mailboxes. lemlist puts its Deliverability Hub, alerts and DNS checks on every plan and charges 100 credits per placement test. Both track opens and clicks by default, which I'd switch off in either.

Can I move my inboxes from Smartlead to lemlist, or back?

Mailboxes you own, yes. Connect them to the other tool through Google or Microsoft sign-in, or IMAP and SMTP, and their sender reputation comes with them. Mailboxes bought through Smartlead's SmartSenders can't be used outside Smartlead. lemlist provides SMTP and IMAP details for mailboxes bought there, and its domains can move to another registrar after 60 days, though the Workspace subscription can't.

What are good alternatives to lemlist and Smartlead?

Instantly is another cold email sender that people often weigh against Smartlead, and Reply.io is another multichannel tool covering email, LinkedIn and calls, like lemlist. Reachkit, which I make, suits founders and teams who send email only and want mailboxes, warmup and a first campaign prepared for them at one price per workspace.

My take

Channels decide this one before anything else, then team shape. If you only send email, run many mailboxes or many clients, and want white label, Smartlead does more of that than lemlist and costs less at volume. If a LinkedIn touch or a call sits next to most emails, lemlist is built for it, and its Email plan is cheap if you bring your own inboxes and data. Either way, allow for warmup plus at least a month of real sends before you judge results. If neither fits, Reachkit has a 30-day free trial with no card.
