Mailchimp pricing and review
Mailchimp is Intuit's email marketing platform for small businesses, billed by how many contacts you store, with a free plan, automation flows and ecommerce tools.

Mailchimp pricing
Mailchimp pricing starts at $13 a month on Essentials for 500 contacts, and the bill follows how many contacts you store, not how many emails you send. Starting prices are from mailchimp.com/pricing/marketing in US dollars, as of October 2026.
| Plan | Starts at | Contacts in that price | Monthly sends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 250 (the cap), 1 seat | 500, at most 250 a day |
| Essentials | $13/mo | 500 (up to 50,000), 3 seats | 10x the contact tier |
| Standard | $20/mo | 500 (up to 100,000), 5 seats | 12x the contact tier |
| Premium | $350/mo | 10,000 (up to 200,000), unlimited seats | 15x the contact tier |
The pricing page labels each paid price “/mo for 12 months” without saying what follows; third-party tables list the same figures with no first-year discount noted. Premium costs $350 even for a list of 500, and very large lists get custom pricing.
Above the base tier, Mailchimp shows prices only on its contact slider. Three third-party tables (EmailToolTester, EmailVendorSelection, Benchmark Email; August to October 2026) agree:
| Contacts | Essentials | Standard | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | $75 | $100 | $350 |
| 10,000 | $110 | $135 | $350 |
| 50,000 | $385 | $450 | $815 |
What counts. Subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count; cleaned, archived and deleted ones don’t (help center). Going over on a monthly plan adds a charge at a rate Mailchimp doesn’t publish, and monthly fees aren’t refundable under its terms.
Discounts and add-ons. Lists of 10,000+ contacts save 15% for the first 12 months, and nonprofits get 15% off. SMS runs on credits priced by country. Transactional email (formerly Mandrill) is for Standard and Premium, not Essentials, from $20 per block of 25,000 emails, less per block at volume.
A typical setup: a store with 10,000 contacts that wants flows longer than four steps needs Standard, about $135 a month per those tables, before discounts or SMS.
What Mailchimp does
Mailchimp sends campaigns and automated emails to people who signed up, and has been owned by Intuit since November 2021. You collect contacts into an audience through sign-up forms, imports or one of its 300+ integrations, sort them with tags and segments, then build emails from templates and send or schedule them.
Flows automate a welcome series or an abandoned-cart reminder: up to 4 steps on Essentials (3 per one help article); Standard and Premium add branching and allow 200 flows (pricing page) or 200 steps (help center). Mail goes out through Mailchimp’s own network, so there are no inboxes to connect or warm up. Its Acceptable Use Policy asks for proof of opt-in behind marketing email and bans purchased, rented and third-party lists.
Intuit Assist, in beta in English for some users, drafts content on Standard and Premium. Since May 2026, Analytics AI explains results on paid plans, and a Mailchimp app lets users in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia draft campaigns in ChatGPT or Claude, then launch them in Mailchimp. Developers get a Marketing API and a Transactional API.
Mailchimp strengths and drawbacks
Strengths
- Easy to pick up. G2 reviewers score its ease of use 8.7 out of 10, and Venture Harbour called it “the easiest email marketing platform to use” in September 2026.
- A low way in. Free for 250 contacts; Essentials from $13.
- Built for online stores. One-click tracking for Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix, plus lifetime-value and purchase-likelihood segments from Standard.
- Wide reach. 300+ integrations and an app in ChatGPT and Claude.
- Support around the clock. 24/7 email and chat on paid plans, phone on Premium.
Drawbacks
- The bill follows the list. At 10,000 contacts, Standard costs about $135, nearly seven times its 500-contact price, and unsubscribed contacts count until archived.
- Premium’s floor. It starts at $350 a month however small the list.
- A shrinking free plan. It fell from 500 contacts to 250 on February 17, 2026, per Mailchimp’s notice as reproduced by PriceTimeline. Free has no scheduling or A/B tests; Mailchimp lists its flows as both “not included” and a “free preview”.
- No cold email. The Acceptable Use Policy bans bought and third-party lists, and Mailchimp can suspend accounts that break it.
What Mailchimp users say
As of October 2026, Mailchimp rates 4.3 out of 5 on G2 from about 13,000 reviews and 4.5 on Capterra from about 17,700, figures from search results since both sites blocked direct checks. On Trustpilot it rates 2.5 from 1,557 reviews, checked October 30, 2026.
EmailToolTester praises the template editor and the range of integrations, while G2’s review summary notes that pricing can climb quickly as lists grow. Trustpilot’s AI summary points to slow support, technical problems and confusing charges, though five-star reviews praising live chat show up in the same weeks. A common Reddit gripe is in one r/SaaS thread’s title: “Mailchimp was charging me for 4,000 unsubscribed contacts”.
Who Mailchimp is for
Mailchimp fits small businesses, creators and online stores that email people who asked to hear from them: newsletters, launches, welcome series and abandoned-cart reminders, especially on Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix.
Look elsewhere if your list is large and mostly quiet, since every stored contact is billed, or if you want to email prospects who never signed up. That’s cold email, which Mailchimp’s rules forbid and which runs from separate inboxes in a dedicated tool (see my guide to cold email infrastructure). If you stay, I’d archive contacts you no longer mail, since archived ones don’t count.

Mailchimp: common questions
How much does Mailchimp cost per month?
Mailchimp's Essentials plan starts at $13 a month and Standard at $20 for 500 contacts; Premium starts at $350 for 10,000 contacts, per its pricing page in October 2026. Third-party price tables put 10,000 contacts at about $110 on Essentials and $135 on Standard.
Does Mailchimp have a free plan?
Yes. Mailchimp's Free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, at most 250 a day, for one user and one audience. It has no scheduling, A/B testing or SMS, and emails carry Mailchimp branding. Essentials and Standard also come with a 14-day free trial.
Do you get charged for unsubscribed contacts in Mailchimp?
Yes. Mailchimp's help center says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count toward a plan's contact limit, while cleaned, pending, archived and deleted contacts don't. Archiving contacts you no longer email lowers the count.
Is Mailchimp worth it?
For opted-in lists that need templates, integrations and ecommerce flows, many users think so: as of October 2026 Mailchimp rates 4.3 on G2 and 4.5 on Capterra, against 2.5 on Trustpilot, where billing and support complaints dominate. Cost rises with each contact tier, so price it at your list size.
Can you use Mailchimp for cold email?
No. Mailchimp's Acceptable Use Policy bans sending to purchased, rented or third-party lists and asks for proof of opt-in behind marketing email, and Mailchimp can suspend accounts that break it. Cold outreach runs from separate inboxes in a cold email tool such as Instantly, Smartlead or Reachkit, which is our product.
