SendGrid pricing and review

SendGrid is Twilio's email delivery platform: an API and SMTP relay for app and bulk email, plus a separately priced Marketing Campaigns editor for opt-in lists.

SendGrid at a glance

Reachkit makes a competing cold email tool. Prices were checked in October 2026 against Twilio’s pricing pages and pricing sheet.

SendGrid pricing

SendGrid pricing starts at $19.95 a month for 50,000 emails on the Email API’s Essentials plan. These are list prices from Twilio’s Email API pricing page and its downloadable pricing sheet, as of October 2026. Overage rates are from the 2025 sheet. Per-1,000 figures are my math.

Email API planEmails a monthPrice a monthOverage per extra email
Essentials 50k50,000$19.95 ($0.40 per 1,000)$0.00133
Essentials 100k100,000$34.95$0.00088
Pro 100k100,000$89.95$0.00110
Pro 300k300,000$249$0.00091
Pro 700k / 1.5M / 2.5Mup to 2,500,000$499 / $799 / $1,099$0.00078 to $0.00047

Premier is custom and sold through sales. Essentials sends from shared IP addresses with one teammate. Pro adds one dedicated IP with automated IP warmup, subusers, SSO, up to 1,000 teammates and 2,500 address validations. Each extra dedicated IP costs $30 a month. Overage is billed the month after, and upgrading doesn’t cancel it.

Marketing Campaigns is a separate subscription, priced by contacts stored: Basic runs from $15 a month (5,000 contacts, 15,000 sends) to $200, and Advanced, which adds automation and dedicated IP access, from $60 to $900 (pricing).

What a typical setup costs: an app sending 120,000 emails a month pays $52.55 on Essentials 100k with overage. Twilio suggests at least two dedicated IPs from 200,000 to 300,000 emails a month, which on Pro 300k comes to $279.

What SendGrid does

SendGrid delivers email that your software or your marketing team sends to people who asked for it. Developers call the v3 Mail Send API or point their app at SendGrid’s SMTP relay, and SendGrid delivers it and passes back feedback-loop data from mailbox providers. You authenticate your own domain with SPF and DKIM, and Pro plans add reverse DNS.

The Email API shows real-time analytics, with bounce and block classifications on Pro, sends events to your app through webhooks, and keeps searchable activity for 3 days on Essentials or 7 on Pro. An address validation API checks lists before you send.

SendGrid isn’t a mailbox. Replies go to whatever reply-to address you set, or its Inbound Parse webhook posts them to your app. It doesn’t sell domains or Google and Microsoft inboxes, and its warmup is for dedicated IPs, not mailboxes.

Marketing Campaigns adds an editor, templates, segments, A/B tests, signup forms and, on Advanced, automation. Twilio says SendGrid has no native AI tools. Twilio bought SendGrid for about $3 billion in February 2019, and sendgrid.com moved into twilio.com in February 2026 with no change to the API or prices.

SendGrid strengths and drawbacks

Strengths

  • Low cost per email. Essentials 50k works out to $0.40 per 1,000, and every self-serve tier publishes its overage rate (pricing sheet).
  • A developer API with a long track record. Capterra’s review summary counts 89% positive of 45 reviews mentioning its developer-friendly API, and G2 reviewers tag API quality and easy integrations.
  • Dedicated IP tooling from Pro. One IP is included, with automated warmup, IP pools and extra IPs at $30 a month (help center).

Drawbacks

  • No free plan. Twilio retired the free plans in 2025 (changelog), though some of its pages still mention one.
  • Shared IPs until Pro. At 100,000 emails a month, a dedicated IP means moving from $34.95 to $89.95.
  • Account reviews and suspensions. Capterra’s summary counts 79% negative of 53 reviews mentioning unpredictable account restrictions.
  • Strict consent rules. Twilio’s Email Policy bans purchased lists and addresses taken from the internet without opt-in, so cold outreach is off the table (policy).

What SendGrid users say

SendGrid’s ratings split by who’s reviewing. As of October 2026, Google shows the Email API at 4.0 out of 5 on G2 from 368 reviews and SendGrid at 4.2 on Capterra from 755. Trustpilot shows 1.1 from 614.

G2 and Capterra reviewers praise ease of use, the API and deliverability. The complaints, on Capterra, Trustpilot and Reddit, are accounts paused or refused during review, slow support, and the end of the free plan. An r/SaaS thread titled “Avoid SendGrid for small SaaS” says “SendGrid’s only solution is to upgrade from $20 / month to $90 / month”. Another is more balanced: “SendGrid honestly still makes sense between 10K-50K emails”.

Who SendGrid is for

SendGrid fits product teams sending email from their own app: password resets, receipts and alerts, from tens of thousands to millions a month. It also fits marketers mailing people who signed up, and teams that want dedicated IPs without running mail servers.

Look elsewhere if you want to email prospects who never opted in. SendGrid’s policy rules that out, and it has no shared reply inbox. For cold email, I’d keep SendGrid for your app’s mail and run outreach from separate domains and inboxes in a tool made for it.

Alternatives to SendGrid

  • Twilio Email: Twilio’s newer pay-per-email product, built on SendGrid technology, at $0.0013 an email with no monthly fee. At 4,000 emails a month that’s about $5.20.
  • Instantly: for outreach rather than app mail, from $47 a month, with optional done-for-you Google inboxes. See the Instantly profile.
  • Smartlead: outreach from your own mailboxes, from $39 a month with no per-mailbox fee. See the Smartlead profile.
  • Zapmail: if you only need the mailboxes, 10 Google or Microsoft inboxes for $39 a month. See Reachkit vs Zapmail.
  • Reachkit (our product): for cold outreach SendGrid rules out, not your app’s mail. From $39 a month, it sends from inboxes you connect or registers separate domains ($15/yr), sets up Google or Microsoft inboxes ($5/mo), starts their warmup and gathers replies in one Unibox.

SendGrid: common questions

Is SendGrid legit?

Yes. SendGrid is a long-running email delivery platform owned by Twilio since 2019, and Twilio says it sends over 205 billion emails a month. As of October 2026 it holds 4.0 on G2 and 4.2 on Capterra. Trustpilot shows 1.1, where reviewers mostly complain about support, and Capterra's review summary flags unpredictable account restrictions.

How much does SendGrid cost?

SendGrid's Email API costs $19.95 a month for 50,000 emails on Essentials, $34.95 for 100,000, and $89.95 to $1,099 a month on Pro for 100,000 to 2.5 million emails. Premier is custom. Marketing Campaigns is billed separately, from $15 a month for 5,000 contacts. Prices checked October 2026 on Twilio's pricing pages.

Is SendGrid still free?

Not permanently. Twilio retired SendGrid's free Email API and Marketing Campaigns plans in 2025. New accounts get a 60-day trial at 100 emails a day with no credit card, then need a paid plan. Twilio's Marketing Campaigns FAQ still describes a free plan, while both pricing pages list a 60-day trial as of October 2026.

Can you use SendGrid for cold email?

Not under its rules. Twilio's Email Policy requires affirmative consent before marketing email and bans purchased or rented lists and addresses taken from the internet or social media without opt-in. Accounts that break the policy can be suspended. Cold outreach usually runs from separate domains and Google or Microsoft inboxes in a cold email tool instead.

How much does it cost to send 1,000 emails with SendGrid?

On SendGrid's Email API list prices, between about $0.35 and $0.90 per 1,000 emails, depending on the plan, as of October 2026. Essentials 100k is the cheapest per email among the self-serve plans. Twilio Email, a separate pay-per-email product on the same technology, charges $1.30 per 1,000 with no monthly fee.

What's the difference between SendGrid and Twilio Email?

Both are Twilio products. SendGrid uses monthly plans by volume, with extras like dedicated IPs on Pro. Twilio Email, generally available since May 2026, charges $0.0013 per email with no base fee or feature tiers. Twilio calls them two separate tools for different purposes. Twilio Email costs less than SendGrid Essentials below about 15,000 emails a month.

Keeping SendGrid for app mail and adding outreach?

Keep SendGrid on your main domain for app and opt-in mail, and run cold outreach from separate inboxes in Reachkit. Try it free for 30 days, no card needed.
