Mailtrap pricing and review

Mailtrap, built by Railsware, sells three products priced on their own: an email API and SMTP service, a sandbox that catches test emails, and email marketing.

Mailtrap pricing

Mailtrap pricing starts at $15 a month for 10,000 emails on the Email API/SMTP Basic plan, and the Sandbox and Marketing products are bought separately, each with its own free plan. The numbers below are Mailtrap’s monthly USD list prices from its pricing page, read October 31, 2026.

Email API/SMTPEmails a monthMonthlyOver the limit, per 1,000
Free4,000 (max 150 a day)$0Sending stops
Basic10k / 50k / 100k$15 / $20 / $30$1.00
Business100k / 250k / 500k / 750k$85 / $200 / $300 / $450$0.88
Enterprise1.5M / 2.5M$750 / $1,250$0.55

Mailtrap’s pages disagree on where custom pricing starts: the pricing page says 2.5M, the help center’s plans page says above 5M. Overage is capped at a level Mailtrap doesn’t publish, and yearly billing for sending goes through sales.

What Business adds: 100 users and domains (Basic has 3 and 5), a dedicated IP that Mailtrap warms automatically, 15 days of logs instead of 5, and 24/7 live chat.

Email Sandbox: Basic $17 a month for 500 test emails, Team $42 for 5,000, Business $123 for 50,000 and Enterprise $498, or $14, $34, $99 and $399 a month billed yearly. Free catches 50 a month.

Email Marketing: free for 500 contacts, Essential from $15 a month for 10,000 contacts, Pro from $59 (25,000) to $499 (250,000). Yearly billing saves up to 20%.

Typical setups (my math): an app sending 50,000 emails that also tests in staging pays $20 plus $42 for Sandbox Team, $62 a month. A 300,000-a-month sender wanting a dedicated IP pays $300 on Business 500k, or $244 on 250k plus overage if the unpublished cap allows.

What Mailtrap does

Mailtrap began inside Railsware, a product studio, as an internal fix after a 2011 test run accidentally sent 200,000 test emails to real customers. Today it’s sold by Railsware Products Studio LLC of Pasadena, California.

Email API/SMTP sends through a REST API or SMTP relay, with official SDKs in eight languages. Transactional and bulk mail go out on separate streams, from shared IPs by default, and you verify your sending domain yourself. Inbound email, generally available since June 2026, is on every plan and counts against the same monthly quota.

Email Sandbox is a fake inbox for staging. Point your test environment at it and Mailtrap holds every email, showing the HTML, headers, a spam score and how the markup fares across email clients. Mailtrap Local (July 2026) is a free, open-source version for your own machine.

Email Marketing covers campaigns, lists, segments and automations.

AI: no AI writing. Mailtrap’s official MCP server lets an assistant like Claude or Cursor send a test email, read sandbox messages or edit templates while you code.

Mailtrap strengths and drawbacks

Strengths

  • The sandbox. G2 reviewers single out the sandbox for catching emails from development and staging (G2).
  • Cheap at volume on Basic. 100,000 emails cost $30 a month, about $0.30 per 1,000.
  • Quick to set up. G2’s compare pages score Mailtrap 9.4 for ease of setup and 8.9 for quality of support.
  • Fast developer releases. A Go SDK, a Terraform provider, inbound email and domain reputation monitoring all shipped between June and September 2026, per the changelog.
  • Targeted suspensions. A suspension can hit one domain or one stream, and queued mail goes out once it’s lifted (docs).

Drawbacks

  • No cold email. The deliverability guide says “Don’t send cold outreach campaigns”, and the acceptable use policy bans “purchased, rented, third-party, co-reg, publicly available data, or partner lists of any kind.”
  • Opt-in checks can stop sending. Most one-star Trustpilot reviews describe blocked sending or suspended accounts, and Mailtrap’s replies point to its opt-in checks. Mailtrap’s docs call a ban permanent: emails are rejected and can’t be recovered.
  • Three bills. Sending, testing and marketing are separate plans. Buying two can take 20% off the cheaper one, but only by asking.
  • Short logs on low plans: 3 days on Free, 5 on Basic.

What Mailtrap users say

Mailtrap rates 4.8 on both G2 (76 reviews) and Capterra (36), per search results in October 2026. Trustpilot, read live, shows 2.8 from 12 reviews, half of them one-star.

Praise centers on the sandbox, the price and friendly support. A May 2026 reviewer calls Mailtrap “one of the first to offer email sandboxes” and says “it works great for testing!” The one-star reviews mostly describe blocked sending or suspensions, such as an “automatic ban without having any options to change any settings” (May 2026). In its replies, Mailtrap says accounts may be suspended where “recipient consent cannot be verified”.

Who Mailtrap is for

Mailtrap fits developer and product teams that want staging email caught and live email sent by one vendor, especially at 10,000 to 100,000 app emails a month, where Basic costs $15 to $30.

Look elsewhere to reach people who never opted in. Prospecting belongs on separate lookalike domains and real mailboxes, away from the domain your password resets come from (how that setup works).

Alternatives to Mailtrap

  • Postmark: ActiveCampaign’s sending API, $15 for 10,000 emails, with a free tier of only 100 a month. See the Postmark profile.
  • Mailgun: also $15 for 10,000 emails on Basic; its free plan allows 100 a day. See the Mailgun profile.
  • SendGrid: Twilio’s platform, $19.95 for 50,000 emails, after a 60-day trial instead of a free plan. See Mailgun vs SendGrid.
  • MailerSend: the lowest entry price here, $7 for 5,000 emails. See the MailerSend profile.
  • Email on Acid: client previews for checking email design, moving into Mailgun Inspect, from $99 a month. See the Email on Acid profile.
  • Reachkit (our product): it won’t catch staging email or send receipts. If you opened a Mailtrap account to email prospects, Reachkit drafts the sequence from one sentence, finds verified leads (1,000 credits a month on the $39 Growth plan) and registers separate domains ($15 a year) with Google or Microsoft inboxes ($5 a month each) that start warmup on their own.

Mailtrap: common questions

How much does Mailtrap cost?

Mailtrap's Email API/SMTP Basic plan is $15 a month for 10,000 emails and $30 for 100,000. Business runs $85 to $450 and Enterprise $750 to $1,250, with custom pricing for the largest senders. Sandbox Basic ($17) and Marketing Essential (from $15) are billed separately. Prices checked October 2026.

Is Mailtrap free?

Each Mailtrap product has a free plan with no card. The free Email API plan sends 4,000 emails a month, capped at 150 a day, and stops sending at the limit. The free Sandbox catches 50 test emails a month, and free Marketing covers 500 contacts. Under Mailtrap's terms, commercial use needs a paid plan.

Is Mailtrap legit?

Yes. Mailtrap is a Railsware product sold by Railsware Products Studio LLC, and it rates 4.8 on G2 and Capterra as of October 2026. Its Trustpilot score is 2.8 from 12 reviews, where the one-star reviews mostly describe blocked sending or suspended accounts.

Can you use Mailtrap for cold email?

No. Mailtrap's deliverability guide says not to send cold outreach, and its acceptable use policy bans outreach without consent and lists that are bought, rented or publicly available. Prospecting needs its own domains and Google or Microsoft mailboxes, set up in a cold email platform such as Reachkit, which is our product.

Mailtrap vs Postmark: which is cheaper?

At 10,000 emails a month both cost $15 on their Basic plans, as of October 2026. Above that Mailtrap is cheaper at list price: $20 against Postmark's $55 for 50,000, and $30 for 100,000 where Postmark's next tier is $115 for 125,000. Mailtrap's free plan sends 4,000 a month against Postmark's 100.

Signed up to Mailtrap to email prospects?

Mailtrap's rules rule out cold outreach. Reachkit sets up separate domains and warmed Google or Microsoft inboxes, drafts your sequence and collects replies in one Unibox. The trial is 30 days with no card; domains and inboxes cost extra.
