Exa pricing and review

Exa is a web search API built for AI agents, with people and company search, contact enrichment and a no-code list builder, paid per request from prepaid credits.

Exa at a glance

Reachkit, the publisher of this page, sells cold email software with a built-in lead database, so it overlaps with Exa where Exa finds people and their contact details. All Exa API prices below were checked on October 15, 2026 against exa.ai and Exa’s billing docs.

Exa pricing

Exa pricing has no monthly plan for its API: you load prepaid credits and pay per request, after $10 of free credit each month. Rates from exa.ai/pricing and the pricing docs, checked October 15, 2026.

EndpointPrice per 1,000Base price covers
Search, Instant$4 (requests)Up to 10 results
Search, Fast or Auto$7 (requests)10 results with text and highlights
Deep search$12 to $15 (requests)Up to 10 results
Answer$5 (requests)One cited answer
Monitors$15 (requests)Up to 10 results
Contents$1 (pages)Each content type bills separately

Results past 10 cost $1 per 1,000, and AI page summaries $1 per 1,000 pages.

Free credits. $10 the day you sign up (up to 2,500 Instant searches), no card, resetting to $10 on the first of every month without carrying over. Completing onboarding also earns your first team a one-time $10 bonus.

Agent and enrichment. Exa Agent costs $0.012 to $1.00 a request at fixed effort levels. Metered runs bill $0.10 per compute unit, $0.005 per search call, $0.02 per email enrichment and $0.07 per phone enrichment, capped by default at $5 a run (auto) or $20 (ultra). Partner data such as Fiber.ai bills on top.

Websets has its own plans and credits, priced on a billing page inside the app. Third-party guides from July to September 2026 report $49 a month for 8,000 credits and $449 for 100,000; Exa’s public pages don’t confirm them.

Enterprise is quoted, with volume discounts and zero data retention.

What a typical setup costs. 10,000 Auto searches a month at 10 results is $70 at list price. Finding emails for 1,500 prospects a month through Agent adds up to $30, or $135 with phone numbers, plus each run’s compute and search calls. Exa bills enrichment per contact found, so those totals assume every lookup finds one.

What Exa does

Exa is a search engine that software calls instead of people. It runs its own crawler and index, which tracked 1.4 trillion URLs as of August 2026 per Exa’s FAQ, rather than reselling Google results. A program sends a query and gets back ranked pages with their text, highlights or summaries.

Besides Search, there’s Contents for known URLs, Answer for a cited answer, and Monitors, which rerun a search on a schedule and post new results to a webhook. Access is by REST API, SDKs, or an MCP server, a standard way for AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT to use other apps.

For sales teams, three parts matter:

  • People and company search: an index of more than 1 billion people profiles, plus company search with structured data.
  • Exa Agent (June 2026): longer jobs such as building a list, checking each candidate against your criteria and enriching contacts, returned as JSON with citations.
  • Websets: a no-code list builder that keeps only items passing every criterion and exports people to Instantly, Smartlead, Lemlist, HubSpot, Salesforce or Clay. Exa’s docs now point new list building to Agent.

Exa finds and enriches. It doesn’t send email.

Exa strengths and drawbacks

Strengths

  • Pricing in the open. Every API rate is published, with no subscription or minimum spend (pricing docs).
  • Its own index. Separate people and company indexes, and homepage benchmarks (Exa’s own) that put it ahead of Perplexity and Brave on FRAMES.
  • Fast. Exa puts Instant search at a 178 ms median response.
  • Ready for agents. A hosted, open-source MCP server, plugins for Claude and ChatGPT, and an official n8n node (MCP docs).

Drawbacks

  • Many meters. Requests, extra results, content types, summaries, Agent compute and enrichment bill separately, and Exa doesn’t publish how many compute units an Agent run uses (Agent docs).
  • Websets is a second bill. Separate plans and credits, prices inside the app, and a webset’s size is “a target, not a guarantee” (Websets FAQ).
  • Low default rate limits. 10 search requests a second; 25 for 90 days after you buy $1,000 of credit within 30 days (billing docs).
  • Data use outside Enterprise. The privacy policy says query data can train Exa’s models. Exa’s pricing page and docs list zero data retention under Enterprise, while the homepage lists it without that condition.

What Exa users say

Exa has few public user reviews so far, although its homepage counts 500,000 developers. G2 shows 4.8 from two reviews, read from search results because G2 blocked our fetch. Trustpilot has no reviews and we found no Capterra listing, both checked October 15, 2026. Product Hunt shows 5.0 from 19 reviews, all from founders building on Exa.

Those founders praise speed and current results; one wrote that Exa “gives our AI real web content and images fast.” Criticism is mostly about price, from Hacker News commenters in May 2025 and from competing search APIs. The top Google result for “exa ai review” is an r/gtmengineering thread where one user calls its structured company and people lists weak. One voice, not a pattern, but test it on your own target list.

Who Exa is for

Exa fits developers building AI agents that need current web results, and GTM engineers who build lists in code or n8n from criteria a database filter can’t express, such as companies that just launched a product.

Look elsewhere if nobody on your team writes code (Websets is the no-code route, on its own plan), or if you need a fixed monthly bill for the API. In my view this is where AI belongs in outbound: finding and qualifying accounts, not writing the emails. Sending, warmup and replies still happen in another tool. More in lead scraping for cold email.

Alternatives to Exa

Exa’s benchmarks compare it with Perplexity, Brave, Parallel and Tavily; we haven’t checked their prices. For sales list building:

  • Firecrawl: scrapes and searches the web for AI agents; 1,000 free credits a month, Hobby $19. See the Firecrawl profile.
  • SerpApi: search engine results as an API; free for 250 searches a month, then from $25. See the SerpApi profile.
  • Clay: runs many data providers on each row; free plan, Launch $185 a month. See the Clay profile.
  • People Data Labs: person and company records by API; free plan, then $98 a month. See the People Data Labs profile.
  • Reachkit (our product): if you use Exa to find people to email, Reachkit’s Lead Finder searches 500M+ people by title, industry, size and technology, verifies each email, and sends from inboxes it can set up and warm for you. Growth is $39 a month with 1,000 lead credits. It doesn’t search the open web; import Exa research by CSV as merge tags. See pricing.

Partly. Every account gets $10 of free credits a month, enough for up to 2,500 Instant searches, with no card. Unused free credits don't roll over.
